[Update] Upcoming changes to how the Monitoring API is handled with GKE projects

We are making changes to how GKE resource usage metrics are handled within a cluster.
Google Cloud Platform
MY CONSOLE
Hello Tee,

We are writing to let you know that for all projects with the Kubernetes Engine API enabled we will also be enabling the Cloud Monitoring API, starting on or after January 25, 2021.

What do I need to know?

Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) uses Cloud Monitoring to provide essential metrics for clusters, including system metrics from worker nodes. These essential metrics support core GKE functionality like auto-scaling. For this reason, the Cloud Monitoring API is a required dependency for the Kubernetes Engine API.

Starting on January 25, 2021, we will be gradually enabling the Cloud Monitoring API on all projects that have the Kubernetes Engine API enabled.

What do I need to do?

No action is required on your part for this change to take effect.

If you are not attempting to use the Cloud Monitoring API anywhere in your project, this will be a no-op for you.

If a project does not contain any GKE clusters and you don't want the Cloud Monitoring API to be enabled in that project, you should disable the Kubernetes Engine API in that project before January 24, 2021. If you wish to do this, go to the Kubernetes Engine API overview in Cloud Console, ensure you have the desired project selected, and click "Disable API".

Your project(s) listed below will have Cloud Monitoring API enabled starting on or after January 25, 2021:

If you have any questions or require further assistance, please contact Google Cloud Support and provide the Project ID you are concerned with.

Thank you for using GKE.
